Juicing Benefits – Health, Diet and Detox

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

When you start making your own juices, try adding a vegetable in the mix that you tend to avoid. Vegetables that you do not like alone might end up tasting great to you when mixed in a juice with other flavors. This is a great way to get nutrients you otherwise wouldn’t.

Make sure and remove the greens from items like carrots and rhubarb. They can contain harmful chemicals that become toxic when juiced. Make sure to research all of your fruits, veggies and other items before juicing them so that you are aware of any important do’s and don’ts before starting.

When you begin to juice, begin with vegetables that you already find palatable. Do not start with only sweet fruits because to get the ultimate benefits of juicing you must include vegetables. Starting with simple vegetables that you enjoy will help you gradually become more familiar with the taste of vegetables in a juice.

If you must store your juice in the fridge, add a tablespoon of lemon juice. This small amount of lemon juice shouldn’t have a major effect on the flavor, but it will keep this juice from becoming discolored as it sits, creating a more appetizing effect. Always try to make your juice just before you drink it, for maximum health benefits.

Store all your fruits and vegetables in the refrigerator, especially in the summertime. Juicing depends on fresh produce and leaving them out starts the process of decay more quickly. Keep your produce nice and cool until you eat it so that you can preserve as many vitamins as you can.

Use color as your guide. When you’re thinking about all the different kinds of juices to make, consider the different colors available. From bright reds to vibrant greens, all the different colored fruits and vegetables have different nutrients and minerals. These differences give you a fuller nutritious experience as well as a wide range of tastes.

Keep your juicer on your counter and in your sight at all times. This will help you to get the most use out of it. If your juicer is hidden in a drawer, you’ll never take it out to use it. By keeping it in plain sight it will be easy to use every day.

Do not forget to remove hard pits from fruits like peaches and cherries before sending them down the juicer. These pits can destroy your juicers blades turning your happy purchase into a giant paperweight. Don’t get into such a flow in your juicing that you forget to make the fruits safe for juicing.

Buying fruit and vegetables for your juicing can be easy by using all five senses to find the freshest produce to bring home. Sniff the item and make sure it smells good, like you would want to eat it. Squeeze it and feel if it’s too hard or too soft. Look it over for imperfections, and then take it home and taste a bit. Enjoy!

Tips For Successfully Relieving Your Back Pain

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Millions of people every day are dealing with back pain. Unfortunately, there are a lot of sufferers who don’t know how to treat and banish back pain from their life permanently. The article below can help you find ways to get rid of back pain for good.

When an attack of back pain strikes, the best thing to do is to ask for help. It’s not shameful to have someone helping you lift objects and cleaning around your home. Do not worsen your injury by performing tasks you are not ready for.

Relaxing is proven to help with back pain. Many people choose to use a breathing technique as a relaxation method. Using controlled breathing exercises can significantly reduce the pain and the stress that may be causing it. These techniques will help alleviate some of your suffering.

Women who are pregnant often have to contend with back pain. The weight that the baby puts on the mother’s front side causes her body to lean forward, and that puts strain on her lower back. The most effective option for relieving this kind of hurt is massaging tightened muscles.

Anyone who has back pain should try yoga. It is actually a wonderful therapeutic activity. The right yoga positions can aid you in realigning your spine to a certain degree. Not only that, it will help free up any muscles and joints that are tight, giving your body a more relaxed feel. Many gyms offer yoga classes.

Even though you shouldn’t drink lots of alcohol if you suffer from a bad back, consuming a small amount of red wine may actually help soothe back pain. Wine will relax your back muscles while also serving as a sleep aid, but only when moderately consumed. It can make a nice remedy for back pain.

Certain back conditions that could cause paralysis can be remedied with surgical intervention, depending on the case and the severity of your condition. Other back conditions may also arise that require surgery in order to be completely resolved. A lot of times these situations are diseases of degenerative nature, or pain that has no cause.

When required to sit in the same position for an extended period, be sure to cross your legs frequently. Leg crossing uses back and hip muscles, so it is good to move them to keep cramps or back spasms from setting in. Make sure that you cross both legs in order to evenly use your muscles.

The best way to safely stretch your back muscles is while they are already warm. Stretch, both before and after exercise, to get the greatest results.

Avoiding alcohol is generally recommended for those in pain, but a glass or two of red wine might help to ease the pain and offers other health benefits, as long as you don’t overindulge. Wine will relax your back muscles while also serving as a sleep aid, but only when moderately consumed. This could be a good remedy for your back troubles.

It may seem counter-intuitive, but people suffering from back pain must start a regular exercise program. Those who suffer from back pain often believe that exercise can further harm them, when in actuality, it is extremely beneficial. You can ease the pain in your back by stretching your muscles.

Find the most comfortable ways to sleep that are also good for your back. Sleeping on your backside has been found to be the best position to keep your back pain under control, and if your back is acting up, you can use a heating pad underneath you. Try to steer clear from sleeping on your abdomen.

Dealing with an attack of back pain can make you miserable. Apply some pain relief techniques the next time you experience discomfort in your back. The helpful hints here might just prove the entrance to a life free of pain.

2. Cardiovascular and aerobic workout routines a few times each week (to make certain the circulation of blood and good heart).

3. Maintain a healthy diet – stay away from processed food if you can.

4. Always be around with positive folks – possess a positive mental attitude.

There are 4 things a person can avoid to maintain an excellent healthy lifestyle:

1. Stay away from aspartame – one of the common substances in no-sugar food such as tabletop sweeteners, breath mint candies, sugar-free chewing gums, carbonated beverages also frozen desserts. Reports have been shown that this additive actually cause cancer cells in rats.

2. Avoid any medications which contain acetaminophen for example Vicodin and Tylenol since this can drive down the glutathione levels in your body. Glutathione is extremely important to the body as it act as a detoxifier and antioxidant.

3. Avoid toxins – clean your fruits and vegetables thoroughly to remove any chemical residues on them. If it is possible, use toxin-free products also consume only all-natural foods. Organic fruits and veggies that aren’t genetically altered.

4. Avoid placing your mobile phones near to our bodies as you are sleeping. Cell phone emits rf energy which is a kind of radio wave that can cause cancer in the long term. It is best to place your handset far away if it is not in used.

Juicing Tips for All Ages

Monday, January 16th, 2012

If you absolutely must store your juice after you make it, make sure to store it in a completely air-tight container. Letting air get at it will start a process which breaks down the nutrients in the juice, leaving a tasty but empty drink that won’t provide you with the healthy benefits you were looking for in the first place.

Use cucumber as a great flavor disguiser when you are juicing greens. Cucumber is excellent at masking the strong flavors inherent in greens. A juice’s health benefits aren’t going to do you much good if you can’t stand to drink it. Cucumber also has the extra added benefit of containing loads of important vitamins and nutrients itself.

If you want your juice to be a certain texture or thickness, know that the softer the fruit is, the thicker the juice will be. The meat of softer fruits breaks up easily to make a thick nectar. Make sure to add some harder fruits, such as apples and pears, for a thinner juice.

If you are getting into juicing for health benefits, you need to remember to drink all your juice in one sitting. The second the juice is made, it will start to lose some nutrients. The faster you can drink it, the more of the health benefits you will be receiving.

Make sure to let your juicer rest and clean out extra pulp if you are making a large batch of juice, especially when you are using harder fruits. Juicers tend to be expensive, and you do not want to burn your juicer out by overworking it or clogging the juicer.

Store your home made juice in a nontransparent, air-tight container with no extra space for air. To prevent extra air from ruining your juice, add filtered water to the top of the container, or use a food saver to remove the extra air. Fresh juice can be stored up to 24 hours.

Start gradually with vegetables. Start by adding bits of vegetables to your fruit juices and work your way up to full vegetable drinks. Vegetables are more nutritious than fruits as a group but not as tasty sometimes. Adding more veggies to your drinks will make your taste buds ready to get that superior nutritional value.

Brush your teeth as soon as possible after drinking fresh fruit juice. Fruit juice is naturally very high in sugar, in addition to containing acids that can eat away at tooth enamel. The longer these sugars and acids sit in your mouth, the worse the damage will be, so brush soon.

Wash your juicing equipment, immediately after you have finished juicing. If you don’t wash your juicer straight away, left over pulp will get hard and be stuck onto the equipment, making it very difficult to clean later on. Additionally, the juice from some fruits and vegetables, can stain juicer jugs and blades.

Based on consumer reviews and overall performance, the best juicing equipment are hands down a Hydraulic Juicer and a Juicer Food Processor.

Foods To Eat For A Healthy Prostate

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Numerous, if not most, men over the age of fifty or so worry concerning the likelihood of their prostrate causing them concerns in the near future. The fact is that many men will have problems with their prostate and the proportion is fairly high.

For most men, this will mean little more than frequent visits to the toilet, where urination will be meager. Nocturnal visits to the toilet are also common. Some men might find themselves in the upsetting situation of ‘dripping’, which involves a wet patch on the trousers.

These are pretty dreary prospects, but there is a lot worse that can happen. It all has to do with the prostate which encircles the tube from the bladder to the penis. It swells from the inside not the outside and so it ‘bites’ on the urethra restricting the flow of urine.

This produces the feeling of having a full bladder but not being able to evacuate it fully. This in turn may cause urinary tract infections (UTI’s) and produce problems for the kidneys which can become life-threatening.

Some individuals think that a diet containing certain foods in quantity can defer or even prevent significant issues with the prostate gland. Here are a couple of the most important ones:

Lycopene: is a robust antioxidant which is accountable for the red colouring in many foodstuffs such as carrots, red grapefruit, watermelons, papayas and tomatoes (but not cherries or strawberries). It is a carotene that exists in numerous red-orange natural foodstuffs.

Lycopene is deposited in the adrenal glands, the liver and the testes, which appears to cause it to be especially effective against prostate cancer. Research continues and there is not enough evidence to convince the world’s Western health authorities yet, but it is recognized as a non-dangerous food colouring in the USA, Europe and Australia.

Lycopene is usually best consumed raw, but with one extraordinary exception – tomatoes. The chemical is more readily absorbed from cooked tomatoes. Hence the recommendation to eat unsweetened tomato sauce.

Lycopene is not merely beneficial for men as it will help in glandular, heart and liver issues too. It is worth keeping an eye on the development of this research carefully and adding red fruits to your diet anyway.

Quercetin: is a flavonoid discovered in fruits, vegetables, leaves, grains, and both green and black tea. It is especially present in (red) onions, red grapes, raspberries, lingonberries, cranberries and tomatoes. (Notice all the red fruits).

Studies have shown that naturally grown or wild fruits have far more quercetin than the ‘intensively farmed’ varieties. 70% more in with regard to tomatoes. Similar percentage increases, between 50% and 100%, were found for most wild fruits.

Quercetin has anti inflammatory characteristics and some research has suggested that it might help reduce the danger of cancer, but as yet, no leading health authorities have been convinced that it is useful at preventing or curing cancer. Another one to watch though.

It is not at all a problem to add some of these foodstuffs into your diet. Doctors have been telling us for decades to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, simply make sure you add a few more red ones and drink tea rather than coffee.

Prostate Cancer And Metastasis

Monday, January 9th, 2012

The prostate is an organ only present in the male body – women do not have one. It is located deep inside the under part of the body and surrounds the neck of the bladder and the first section of the urethra. It is quite small being around three by four centimetres and is most easily accessed from the back passage.

A few things could go wrong with the prostate and it is very likely that one of them will affect every man in later life to some degree or another. Some of the most common concerns are:

prostatitis which is the inflammation of the prostate due to bacterial disease

the benign enlargement of the prostate which is a common feature of the aging process, affecting numerous men over 50 years of age

prostate cancer, which is the fourth most common cancer in men

The growth of prostate cancer appears to be positively linked to the presence of the male hormone androgen. Castration has a noticeable positive impact on the growth of prostate cancer.

The prostate is conical in shape, but has five definite lobes. Cancer nearly always develops in the rear-most lobe, whereas benign growths seem to prefer the other lobes.

All worries with the prostate have the impact of making urination difficult. This is why older men tend to go to the toilet frequently. Prostate cancer also developes faster than most other types of cancer.

Because of this, older men ought to have tests for prostate cancer quite frequently. Not only does prostate cancer grow quickly, but it also spreads rapidly. The medical term for this spreading is ‘metastasis’.

If this form of cancer is not caught soon, it will spread rapidly through the various internal organs, the lymph nodes and the blood. Death can occur soon after diagnosis, unless it is noticed in a very early point.

Self diagnosis is virtually impossible because it is a small internal organ hidden between the penis and the anus. One of the first indications is a problem with urination, but by then it could already be too late to avoid metastasis.

If the cancer progresses to the bladder and urethra, urination will become painful and there might be blood in the urine as well. If the cancer is advanced, urination might become impossible and kidney issues will follow soon. Kidney failure or kidney disease is a common side-effect of prostate cancer.

If the metastasis is well advanced, there could be back pain in the lower back region or in the hips. Shortage of breath would indicate a further development of the cancer to the lungs. A general feeling of weakness might be the next symptom.

if caught early enough, prostate cancer can be treated fairly successfully. Frequently a catheter is needed, but it could also mean dialysis if the kidneys have been badly affected.

Part of the prostate may be removed, but it is also possible to remove it entirely, although not without consequences. Other treatments include hormones and chemotherapy.

Some individuals believe that prevention can be procured by homeopathic medications or a healthy diet, but the jury is out on that one officially.

Diabetes and Protein Needs

Monday, December 26th, 2011

Diabetes is a disorder caused by the pancreas’ inability to release enough insulin to handle the blood sugar in the body during digestion. There are three types of diabetes: Type I, or juvenile diabetes, Type II, also called adult onset diabetes and Gestational diabetes. Each type of diabetes has its own considerations and warnings for good health. Proper nutrition is important no matter what type of diabetes has been diagnosed.

Type I diabetes affects about 10% of all diabetics and is typically diagnosed at a fairly young age. Type II diabetes is typically discovered sometime after the age of 30, however, with so many children being obese, it is being found at younger and younger ages. The mechanisms for Type I and Type II diabetes are very different – juvenile diabetes is considered to be a defect in the pancreas itself. The body will start attacking the organ, destroying its ability to make insulin.

Type II diabetes, on the other hand, starts because the other organs in the body start resisting the insulin which is produced by the body. Type II is a progressive disease, starting with a need for dietary changes, then leading to a need for medications and eventually to needing insulin. A precursor to diabetes, pre-diabetes, can be present in the body for many years. Type II diabetes is more common in women than in men and tends to run in the family. Reduction of the risk of this type of diabetes is regular exercise and weight control. Warning signs of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, especially at night, constant hunger, blurred vision, unusual fatigue, sores that will not heal, unexplained weight loss, menstrual irregularity, and chronic yeast infections.

Risk Stats for Diabetes

Type II diabetes affects about 10% of all adults in the United States, with 90% of those people considered to be overweight or obese. Women who develop gestational diabetes are 20-50% more likely to develop Type II diabetes within five to ten years after the birth of the baby. Gestational diabetes is dangerous for the baby as well as the mother – the pregnancy is automatically classified as high risk (Source: Ammer, 2005).

Risk factors for diabetes include being more than 20% over your ideal weight, having persistent hypertension, having poorly controlled blood cholesterol, having a family history of it, especially in parents or siblings, being of certain ethnicities, including African American, Hispanic American, Native American or Asian American, or having gestational diabetes or having had a baby that is over nine pounds (with or without the diagnosis of gestational diabetes).

Testing needs to be done, including fasting blood sugar, A1C testing starting at 45 and completed every three years unless there is reason to test more frequently. Those who are at higher risk may need to be tested every year.

Protein Needs in Diabetes

Type II diabetes can be controlled with diet – just a small reduction in weight can typically eliminate the need for medication. Diabetes, if left unchecked, can lead to some very serious health risks, including an increased risk for kidney disease, blindness, heart disease and amputation. Protein plays a very vital role in not only helping to lose weight but in stabilizing the blood sugar levels that can be so hard to control for the diabetic.

When the body digests food, it is broken down at a rate based on what it is made of: fats and simple carbohydrates break down very quickly, while complex carbs digest at a slower rate. Proteins break down very slowly within the body and require more work by the body. This creation of energy also causes increased heat, a phenomena called thermogenesis. (Only alcohol creates more thermogenesis than protein)(Source: Westerterp). Fats are broken down to fats, carbs are broken down to be used for energy and protein is used as the last resort for energy but is used by the body for a large range of other functions.

Protein is important in the body, but can be dangerous if it makes up too much of the diet, especially in the presence of heart or kidney disease. The American Heart Association recommends that the upper limit of protein intake be no more than 35% of the daily calories, however, each diabetic’s doctor will set specific dietary guidelines. A person with stages one to four of chronic kidney disease should strive to limit protein because of their disease, but within reason and only under the direction of a doctor, a dietician or a nutritionist (Source: National Kidney and Urologic Disease Information Clearinghouse).

For weight loss purposes, calories should come from carbohydrates (50%), proteins (30-35%) and fats (15-20%). The higher level of protein makes the diet more satisfying without deprivation. (Source: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) The protein need in the body is so great that if we do not get the right amounts, the body will eat more food to make up for it (Source: Massey University, 2009). The more food that is needed, the more calories will be ingested. It is a myth that protein does not turn to fat in the body – if there is too much consumption, the body will store it as such.

Protein comes from two sources, plants and animals. Plant protein, with the exception of soy protein, is incomplete because it lacks one or more of the amino acids that the body needs to have supplied by the diet. Because they are incomplete, vegetarians need to make sure that their diet is balanced and varied so that they do not miss out on any of the essential amino acids. The typical vegan diet gets about 10-12% of its calories from protein, while the average diet is 14-18% protein (Source: Mangels).

Animal protein is complete and comes from sources such as meat, dairy, and eggs. Leaner protein sources should always be selected so that the diet is lower in saturated fats as well as calories. Good animal proteins include tuna and salmon as well as other fatty fish. Turkey is another good protein source, specifically roasted, skinless breast meat. Low-fat dairy products and eggs are also excellent sources of animal protein that can work well in the quest to lose weight and be healthier.

Protein supplements are also important to add to the diet but should be of specific types. Some may be loaded with additional sugar, which can cause too much blood glucose. Profect, from Protica, is a small liquid supplement that supplies 25 grams of protein in only 100 calories with zero fat and zero carbohydrates. In addition, Profect supplies both vitamin C and vitamin B complex.

Be wary of protein bars, especially those with candy like flavors, as they may have enough calories or a high enough sugar content that they are equivalent to candy bars. Diabetics should discuss their supplement options with their doctor for optimal health. There are certain brands, especially of protein shakes, that are specifically designed for diabetics. Protein supplements have the advantage of stabilizing the blood sugar and preventing hunger between meals.

Concentrated Protein Supplementation for Bariatric Patients

Sunday, December 25th, 2011

Concentrated protein supplementation is highly recommended for bariatric patients for two specific reasons. The primary reason is to aid short-term recovery after bariatric or weight reducing surgery. The secondary is for maintaining long-term good health.

Bariatric surgery can be minor or major. In addition, it can be very traumatic to particularly overweight bariatric patients. Wound healing demands amino acids to generate new protein tissue, concentrated protein supplementation is ideal for that. Over the longer term, you would not be able to consume as much, and depending upon the extent of the surgery, food intake could be dramatically reduced.

If this is the case, then the food that you should eat must be as nutritious as possible. If you filled your diet full of sugary foods and plant or vegetable foods, you would only be able to extract a small amount of nutrition. You would likely not take sufficient proteins, vitamins, and minerals to maintain a healthy body, and yes, you would certainly lose weight. However, you would not get the full benefit of the procedure you have undergone because you would not be able to maintain a good level of health.

During the first few days after surgery, you will be given highly nutritious liquid foods to ingest. Additionally a high protein concentrate would be ideal to promote satisfactory and rapid healing of your wounds. In order to heal, your body must generate protein; a protein supplement would provide you with all the raw materials you need for that. Going into the future, the same protein supplement will provide you with all the amino acids you need to allow your body to biosynthesize all the proteins required to function properly.

Proteins are everywhere in your body, and are absolutely essential for life. They form all the enzymes that enable your body’s chemistry to progress smoothly. Proteins help digest food, enable your metabolism to maintain life, and are also the basis of your DNA, the molecules of life itself. Without proteins there would be no life as we know it, animal or vegetable.

Your body does not use raw protein from your diet to generate other proteins. Rather, it breaks dietary proteins down into their constituent amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, a bit like differently shaped Lego bricks that can be joined together in almost an unlimited number of ways to form larger complex units known as proteins.

Depending which source you read, there are 20 to 22 standard amino acids that are used to produce the thousands of proteins in your body. There are 8 to 10 the body cannot manufacture itself, and so must be available from the proteins in your diet. Without these you could not survive.

Keeping in mind, bariatric patients can eat only a small amount of food; it is unlikely that they would be able to maintain a healthy diet containing all the proteins, vitamins, and minerals needed by the human body. Similarly deficiencies in the carbohydrates needed for energy required to keep your heart beating, your lungs breathing, and your digestion working exist as well.

Concentrated protein supplementation enables you to meet all your protein requirements. This then allows your body to extract the amino acids it needs and still provides room for you to take in the vitamins and minerals needed. Additionally you are able to enjoy the ‘reward foods’ that will give you your carbohydrate requirement. In this way, bariatric patients can enjoy their meals just as anybody else.
