Asbestos is resistant to heat and chemicals and have vast tensile strength and flexibility. The material has been historically used for its mixture of prized qualities. Hazardous by nature, inhalation of the material can cause severe health issues such as lung cancer, Asbestosis and Mesothelioma.

Asbestos is derived from a natural material also commonly used in the production of glass and chips used in our everyday computers and laptops. There are three main varieties of Asbestos materials; white Asbestos (Chrysotile), brown Asbestos (Amosite) and blue Asbestos (Crocidolite). All three known types of Asbestos are now considered a danger to human health and well being, and are associated with many types of lung complaint.

There are three main types of Asbestos related illness:

A doctor will investigate your symptoms after discussing your concerns with you and he or she will also probably listen to your chest using a stethoscope. When suffering from asbestosis a crackling noise will easily be heard on the patient’s chest. This is a sure sign of asbestosis.

In the early 1900s, researchers noticed elevated death rates and lung diseases in asbestos mining areas and by the 1930s scientists had officially diagnosed sufferers of ‘asbestosis’ and ‘Mesothelioma’ with a direct link to the exposure to asbestos.

If an asbestosis diagnosis is expected then the following three tests will be conducted – a spirometer test: This measures how much oxygen you can inhale in relation to how much carbon dioxide you exhale. An X-ray: This may be taken of your lungs and chest. If the asbestos is predicted to be in its early stages then a CT scan may be carried out in order to see clearly what the extent of it is.

In years gone by Asbestos played a large part in the construction of buildings, it was used for insulation, roofing and was present in paints and even pipe work. For many workers, handling Asbestos was just part of everyday life. The dangers of Asbestos were relatively unknown at the time, and the workers handling the material were certainly not aware of the dangers associated to their health.

Asbestos is naturally occurring silica, which can be compared to the silica used in the production of glass, or computer chips for example. There are three main types of Asbestos available, white Asbestos (Chrysotile), brown Asbestos (Amosite) and blue Asbestos (Crocidolite). All three are known as being dangerous to human health and have been associated with cancerous and non cancerous lung diseases.

There are three main types of Asbestos related illness:

Pleura, hardens the lung and ‘calcifies’ or thickens the lungs lining tissue.

Lung Cancer, this is the most common disease associated with the inhalation and exposure to Asbestos related materials.

Lung cancer, this is the most common disease associated with the inhalation and exposure to Asbestos related materials.

Asbestos related illnesses have occurred at alarmingly high rates towards the end of the 20th century, the patients were predominantly retired or of retiring age and had been exposed decades earlier when working in conditions where they were repeatedly exposed to Asbestos, such as mines, mills, factories or construction and plumbing.

The volume of Asbestos related deaths has unfortunately continued to rise, although it is believed this has now hit a top limit, which is in part due to the protective clothing worn when handling the material, and the material no longer being used in construction.

The delay between exposure to asbestos and the development of cancer is generally 20 or more years.
