There are very few of us who don’t have at least one mole on our body, in fact most people will have many more! Something like fifteen to twenty moles will appear somewhere on the body in the first twenty years of someone’s life. However, one worry many people have is whether their skin moles can grow into cancerous moles.
I know it sounds a rather scary, but moles are actually classed as a tumor. This is also the most common type of tumor that is found in humans. The majority of skin moles are completely harmless, and the only issue they may cause, are in the way some people see themselves, particularly if they have facial moles.
However, a few skin moles may be pre-cancerous and develop into a dangerous and problematic type of cancer. This type of mole is referred to as a dysplastic nevi. If you do have a skin mole that keeps coming back after you have had it removed, it is feasible that it is a melanoma. Such irregular growths are most common in people who already have a genetic predisposition towards them. If you suspect you have a pre-cancerous mole, you should contact your doctor immediately. Here are a selection of the signs that your skin mole could be dangerous. Please keep in mind that this is not a full list.
Cancerous skin moles may possess one, some, or all of the following qualities:
- It may present with an inconsistent colour or shape
- The mole may bleed spontaneously
- Be larger in size than the eraser found on a pencil
- Will change in size and colour
- Cancerous moles can be painful or itchy
- There may be inflammatory changes that are independent of any external factors
I would just like to emphasize again that most skin moles are quite innocent, so don’t get worried unless something is very obvious. If you have any moles that present any of the above qualities, contact your doctor as soon as possible. The quicker you can deal with any moles that are worrying you, or that do turn out to be pre-cancerous moles, the easier it will be for everybody.
