What is Chelation?

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Chelation (pronounced key-LAY-shun) is a process in which chemicals unite with minerals. It comes from the Greek chele, which means “claw.” Like a claw, a chelation agent will grab and chemically bond with minerals, metals or poisons. The process occurs naturally in a body (blood hemoglobin unites with iron and thus oxygen is provided to parts of the body). Man first created chelation agents during World War II to rid the body of toxic metals. Scientists synthesized a ring of molecules which encircled mineral molecules and eliminated them from the body.

As a generally recognized way of ridding the body of heavy metals and poisons, chelation agents are usually administered intravenously. Chelation agents or chelates locate toxins and form a bond with them. Thus the toxin is pulled off the cell it was attached to and washed out of the body. The drawback here is that the toxin is not neutralized in this method and has a chance to attach itself to other cells in some other part of the body. Dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA), dimercaptopropane sulfonate (DMPS), or ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) are names of chelates currently used.

A synthetic amino acid, which has been useful as a heavy metal chelating material, is EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetra-Acetic Acid). It is an FDA-approved treatment for lead, mercury, aluminum and cadmium removal, and has been used for lead chelating for over 50 years. EDTA also assists in restoring blood vessels jammed with calcium and arterial plaque. Basically EDTA is non-toxic and has few noticeable side effects. Unfortunately, it can also chelate necessary minerals and other elements from the body, so the treatment should be supplemented with vitamins and minerals.

Although chelation is the only way to treat lead poisoning, it’s beneficial results on the bloodstream can be used to treat other medical conditions. In addition to being the only way to treat lead poisoning, it removes unwanted metals, mineral deposits, calcium-based plaques and chemical poisons. Because of this, people with atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries by plaque deposits) and arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries and diabetes may also benefit.

For obvious reasons, double-blind studies have never been done to prove or disprove clinical benefits from bypass surgery or balloon angioplasty. The effectiveness of EDTA chelation therapy has been clinically proven to the same extent as bypass surgery and angioplasty, or more so, as established in data from the clinical studies published in the textbook of EDTA Chelation Therapy by Cranton.

A complete program of chelation therapy involves dietary changes, away from highly refined and processed foods. The use of nonprescription nutritional supplements is emphasized, more than expensive and highly profitable drugs patented and marketed by the pharmaceutical industry. Chelation therapy is performed in doctors’ offices, without the need for hospitals, surgeons, cardiologists and the large team of health professionals who profit greatly in dollars and reputation from the $6 billion per year bypass surgery and balloon angioplasty. It is a well-proven therapy and has been performed on more people than have received bypass surgery.

The most frequent criticism leveled by critics of non-traditional and alternative medical therapies is that new treatments are “unproven” because randomized, double-blind, controlled studies have not yet been done to prove effectiveness. Those criticisms ignore the fact that most medical procedures routinely performed in the practice of medicine are also unproven using those same criteria.

With 800,000 people per year dying in the United States alone from arteriosclerosis and its complications, despite the best of high-technology hospital and surgical care that is available, it is imperative that the public be given the option to receive EDTA chelation therapy. It would be senseless to continue to deny a therapy, which has the potential to greatly reduce long-term medical expenditures by reducing the need for far more expensive hospitalization, surgery or angioplasty. Savings to medical insurance companies with resulting reduction in insurance premiums could be great.

How about the improvement in quality of life?

Chelation patients have a tremendous increase in their expected life, although the chelation doctors are reluctant to admit it. It turns out that intravenous chelation therapy greatly reduces the risk of cancer as well as further heart disease. The chelation treatment deals with basic sources of all illness — the tiny particles of metal, which accumulate over time and which greatly, increase the production of free radicals in the body. As the interior source of free radical production is reduced, by more than one million times, the acceleration of aging stops and people generally feel much younger.

When the toxic metals are removed from the body by intravenous chelation therapy, billions and billions of free radicals are prevented from being created because the metals are now gone. When they exist in the body, they encourage a huge production of free radicals.

So, immediately all that poison being produced in the body STOPS.

The major causes of death in this country at present are heart disease and cancer. These can be reversed and prevented.

What chelation handles is the damage caused by free radicals; the therapeutic benefit of the chelating substance in reducing free radical activity and even reversing damage that had been done by those free radicals is astounding.

Medical Solutions to Getting Older

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (abbreviated A4M) is a non-profit organization with members from over 100 countries. The members are not only doctors and health care professionals interested in anti-aging medicine, but people from governments and general public members.

The group has a stated purpose which includes education concerning anti-aging medicine, not only doctors and health professionals but also general public. They want to advance technology to detect, prevent and treat aging related diseases, and assist research concerning aging.

They hold that the human lifespan can be increased and that people can enjoy a quality and active lifestyle to the end of years. They also believe that problems and symptoms and incapacitating diseases related to age have a physiological cause and therefore can be treated with medical treatments.

A4M is not a commercial organization, so they do not endorse any particular products of sell any treatments. They seek only to disseminate the information available in the field concerning innovative science and research, and new treatments that enhance the lives of older individuals, while preventing the younger ones from getting symptoms of age.

Often doctors interested in this field are right at the cutting edge of research on anti-aging. Many are classified as alternative practitioners, although they are M.D.’s and D.O.’s who have received the traditional education that every other doctor has. These doctors seek something more for their patients than conventional medicine can deliver. Realizing that they often caused more harm than good with side effects of conventional medicine, they have turned to natural remedies that cause no side effects.

For example, hormone replacement therapy has helped untold numbers of men and women deal with effects of aging. One can use synthetic hormones for the replacements, and sometimes these synthetic hormones help deter symptoms of menopause and andropause (male menopause). But they also bring with them increased risk for serious diseases, including cancers and heart disease.

Alternative practitioners turn to bioidentical hormones, made from plant sources, to use as replacement hormones, because they carry no risk of side effects, and they more successfully erasing the symptoms they are meant to handle. Bioidentical means that the hormones are exactly like the ones the body produces.

So if you are seeking help with effects of aging, and wish to live a long active life, consider seeking a doctor who will use natural remedies and who wishes to bring about results without harming the patient. Ask for recommendations from other patients. A tremendous amount of research has been done in the field of anti-aging medicine, and a doctor who will apply that research in a way that will help and not harm a patient is a gem.

Very Best Antioxidant-rich Snacks

Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

Antioxidants are substances that prevent free radicals from damaging the cells in your body. Some sort of anti-aging agent if you would. They are found in different kinds of foods that we eat everyday and are very essential to our health since they lower the risk of health problems like cancer and heart disease.

Although antioxidant-rich foods are an important part of a healthy diet, do not limit yourself to these types of foods alone. Your body needs to receive nutrients that can be found not in one group of food only but in a variety. But for now let us just focus on some of the food that are considered to be very rich in antioxidants.

Fruits and vegetables are food groups that probably always make it to the list of food you should include in your diet. We are not exaggerating when we do that because we all know that they are indeed healthy foods. So when you talk about antioxidant-rich food, they belong to the top. Vitamins A, C and E are antioxidants that you will find mostly in fruits like tomatoes, avocados and carrots. A good serving of these fruits everyday can help you stay away from heart problems.

Some fruits are just better than others. That is true with berries. Eating berries (cranberries, strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries) can help your brain and heart stay healthy. The reason? Antioxidants of course! Berries are so rich in antioxidant that they are number one on the list of antioxidant-rich fruits. They also help in weight loss according to recent studies.

Brace yourself for the highest ranking food that is rich in antioxidant ” the dark chocolate! Again let me repeat it ” the dark chocolate. Yes, only dark chocolates and not the ones with milk on it. Dark chocolate comes from cocoa powder that is known to be rich in antioxidant, topping even the popular green tea.

When it comes to chocolate, darker is better. Studies have shown that people who eat dark chocolate two or three times a week have lower blood pressure compared to those who prefer milk chocolate or no chocolate at all. You must remember that too much of something is not good for the body so having a balanced diet is still the most effective way to get the most out of what you eat.

Can Sunshine Possibly Prevent Thousands Of Cases Of Breast And Colon Cancer?

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

As a chiropractor in San Diego, I feel like I need to set the records straight. If you are like many people, you probably think the sun causes skin cancer. Our chiropractic patients in San Diego regularly bring up this issue and ask about prevention. And why shouldn’t you? Some news coverage has demonized the sun as unsafe. It has sent many running from it like Vampires at dawn.

The truth is that overexposure to the sun can cause problems. What you probably don’t know – underexposure can be dangerous to your health. Here’s why: A new study looking at the relationship between vitamin D serum levels and the risk of colon and breast cancer across the globe has estimated the number of cases of cancer that could be prevented each year if vitamin D3 levels met the target proposed by researchers.

Cedric F. Garland, Dr.P.H., is a cancer prevention specialist at the Moores Cancer Center at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Colleagues estimate that 250,000 cases of colorectal cancer and 350,000 cases of breast cancer could be prevented worldwide by increasing intake of vitamin D3. This is particular in countries north of the equator. Vitamin D3 is available through diet, supplements and exposure of the skin to direct sunlight.

The research paper which looks at the dose-response relationship between vitamin D and cancer will be published in the August edition of the journal of Nutrition Reviews. It stated that for the first time, we are saying that 600,000 cases of breast and colorectal cancer may possibly be prevented each year worldwide, including nearly 150,000 in the United States alone,” said study co-author Garland.

The study combined data from surveys of serum vitamin D levels during winter from 15 countries. It is the first such study to look at satellite measurements of sunshine and cloud cover in countries where actual blood serum levels of vitamin D3 had also been determined. The data was then applied to 177 countries to estimate the average serum level of a vitamin D metabolite of people living there.

The data revealed an inverse association of serum vitamin D with risk of colorectal and breast cancer. The protective effect began at levels ranging from 24 to 32 nanograms per milliliter of 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration in the serum. The 25-hydroxyvitamin D level is the main indicator of vitamin D status. The late winter average 25-hydroxyvitamin D in the U.S. is about 15-18 ng/ml. The researchers maintain that increasing vitamin D levels in populations, particularly those in northern climates, has the potential to both prevent and possibly serve as an adjunct to existing treatments for cancer.

It was stated that the suitable dose of vitamin D in order to reach this level could be very small in a lifeguard in Southern California. On the opposite end of the spectrum, it can be quite a lot for someone in Northern Europe who tends to remain indoors most of the year. This could be best achieved with a combination of diet, supplements and short intervals of 10 or 15 minutes a day in the sun. It could be less for very fair-skinned individuals.

The serum level recommended by the study would correspond to intake of 2000 International Units per day of vitamin D3 for a meaningful reduction in colorectal cancer. The researchers recommend 2000 IU/day, plus, when weather allows, a few minutes in the sun with at least 40% of the skin exposed, for a meaningful reduction in breast cancer incidence, unless the individual has a history of skin cancer or a photosensitivity disease. Garland also recommends moderate sun exposure and use of clothing and a hat when in the sun longer than 15 minutes.
